Robert E. Mattox

Robert E. Mattox, 87, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday March 15, 2009, at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in St. Joseph, MI. A Burial of Ashes will be celebrated at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph, MI at a later date. Donations may be made to Twin Cities Salvation Army or St. Judes Children’s Hospital. Those wishing to send the family a message of condolence may do so online at www.starks-menchinger.com. Robert was born on November 6, 1921 to Robert and Anna (Grenat) Mattox in Lawrenceburg, IN. He graduated high school in Lawrenceburg. Robert enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in World War II with a purple heart medal and air medal. Robert was an active member of the 457th Bomb Group Association. He married the late, Marian McDorman on May 31, 1944 in Alexandria, LA. Together, they raised two sons, Robert and Joel. Robert was an accountant for most of his life and he retired from the Berrien County Assessors in 1993. Robert was a member of the Lakeshore Rotary Club. He was an avid fisherman and he loved model railroading as well as St. Joseph High School Bear Athletics. He is survived by his sons, Robert E. (Janet) Mattox, Jr. of St. Joseph, Joel D. (Karen Perizzolo, M.D.) Mattox of Chapel Hill, NC; Four grand-children, Matthew, Emily, Jeffrey and Kathleen; and nephew, Robert J. Swedenberg of Stevensville. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marian and his parents, Robert K. and Anna Mattox.
