Mildred's Obituary

Mildred B. Schultz left this world to be in the loving embrace of the Lord on Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Her family deeply grieves her passing and in faith entrusts her to the Lord who was so dear to her and whom she served so joyously throughout her 82 years. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 26, 1926, Mildred was the second child of Adam and Angeline Tomaszewski. She married Edward A. Schultz on September 17, 1949, and together they had four children. Mildred retired from Benton Harbor Area Schools after being a dedicated employee for over 20 years, first as a secretary at the elementary schools and later at the Administration Building as secretary to the Superintendent. She was a member of the Berrien County Association of Retired School Personnel, and the Lakeland Continuing Care Center Volunteer Association of which she was a past President. She also volunteered at the Catholic Community Center and Birthright. Mildred enjoyed sewing, crafts, and decorating, and was very creative. She loved spending time with her family, and also cherished her time spent playing cards with her condo friends. Everyone who knew Mildred knew she prided herself on being independent and helping others. Mildred leaves behind her loving husband with whom she shared 59 wonderful years, Edward A. Schultz; children Carol Norton of Benton Harbor, Alan (Judy) Schultz of Alpharetta, Georgia, Julie (Ernie) Crane of Coloma, and Marci (Larry) Thivierge of Jenison, Michigan; grandchildren Jeremy, Ryan, and Shawn Norton, Brendan and Conner Schultz, Joel (Hannah) and Allison Schmidt, and Alex and Kirk Thivierge; and great grandchildren Jeremy Norton, Jr., Abigail Schmidt, and Gabriel Finch. Mildred is also survived by two sisters, Lucille Vicini and Ruth (Roland) Shuler, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Tomaszewski and Lucille Schultz, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her son-in-law Michael Norton, brother Edward A. Tomaszewski, brother-in-law Paul Schultz, and sisters-in-law Valentine Rose and Ruth Burns. Visitation will take place at Starks-Menchinger Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, on Friday, October 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., with the Rosary recited at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 11, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, Benton Harbor, of which Mildred was a life-long member. Interment will follow in Lincoln Township Cemetery, Stevensville. Because Home Care was so vital to Mildred during the last few years of her life, memorial contributions may be made to Lakeland Health Foundation for Lakeland Home Care, or the Catholic Community Center at St. John & Bernard Parish. Friends wishing to send condolences may do so at the guest book at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mildred fought a long and courageous battle and never gave up. Her family would like to thank her many dear friends for all of the love, care, and support shown to her throughout her illness.
