Elmer E. Jones, 78, of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., St. Joseph, with Msgr. Michael Osborn as celebrant. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph with military rites conducted by Stevensville American Legion Post #568. Friends may call from 2:00 until 5:00 P.M. Sunday, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Liturgical Prayers recited at 4:30 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America-SW Michigan Council-Troop #624 or St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mr. Jones was born February 19, 1930 in St. Joseph to Emil & Ida (Hahn) Jones. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1948 and served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War. On August 13, 1955, he married the former Mary Louise Post in St. Joseph. Elmer was employed by Indiana & Michigan Electric Co., retiring as Warehouse Supervisor in 1992 after thirty-nine years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #120 of St. Joseph, and Stevensville American Legion Post #568. Elmer was active in boy scouts for many, many years. He was currently the scout master for Troop #624 in St. Joseph. He made many trips to Mackinac Island with the scouts, was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, and served in the Governor’s Honor Guard. Elmer was an avid Notre Dame Fan and enjoyed tending to his rose gardens. Most of all, he enjoyed the time spent with his family, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Elmer is survived by his wife Mary; his children-Christopher (Christine) Jones of St. Joseph, Diane (Philip) Neville of Troy, MI, Connie Jones of Lansing, MI, Michael (Kathleen) Jones of Dowagiac, Gregory (Becky) Jones of Kalamazoo; grandchildren-Susanne & Kevin Jones, Brian & Shannon Neville, Jessie, Brady, Casey, Katie & Brandon Jones; and the many people in his scouting family. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-Louis & Harry Jones, and his sister Dorothy Strine Rush.
