Effie Mae Long

Effie M. (Jewell) Long, 82, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday morning, May 25, 2008, in her home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph with Pastor Fred Davey officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Garden in Coloma. Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Effie was born April 2, 1926, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. She was one of seven children born to Leonard and Martha Jewell. On October 30, 1943, Effie married Scott Long in Benton Harbor. Together they had three children. They enjoyed traveling together and took numerous vacations to Europe and Hawaii. She acted as her husband’s navigator on several flights in their private airplane. Effie also enjoyed cross-stitching, golfing, fishing, playing cards, and collecting beer steins. Effie was a loving wife and mother and particularly cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Effie is survived by her husband Scott of 65 years; children, Lois (Chuck) Cummings of Hattiesburg, MS and Scott (Regina) Long of Benton Harbor; grandchildren, Scott Gerald and Katie Long, Lisa Ann Kolburg, Leslie Kolburg Dean, and Tamara Bowman; five great-granddaughters; and by her sister Lois Weber of Bainbridge, MI. In addition to her parents, Effie is preceded in death by her daughter, Constance Susan Kolburg; sisters, Esther Ginther, Thelma Tschirhart, Mary Alice Alfred, Virginia Jewell and by her brother, Clifford Jewell.
