Pauline's Obituary
Pauline Duton
BENTON HARBOR – Pauline Dunton went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 21, 2008, surrounded by family and friends. Pauline was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Rochester, Ind., She was the youngest of seven children born to Oliver and Sarah Borden. Pauline grew up in northwestern Indiana and lived in that area until 1944 when she relocated to Michigan following her marriage to Eugene Dunton.
Pauline was a modest woman and a homemaker for most of her life. When younger, she grew her own vegetables, canned her own fruits and vegetables, made jams, jellies and apple butter for her family, friends and neighbors. She made her own quilts, braided rugs for the floor and sewed clothes for herself and her children. There was little she could not do and she would attempt almost anything.
Pauline leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Robert (Mary) Clemans of Edwardsburg and James (Caroline) Carey of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and four daughters, Rosetta Stout of Logansport, Ind., Susan (Lester) Fairbanks of Watervliet, Patricia Lester of Coloma and Sandra (Jim) Vermilyer of Hagar Shores. She also leaves many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who will miss her dearly.
Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, in 1974; her daughter, Katheryn Carey, in 1934; son, Cephus Dunton, in 1961; son, Rex “Dave” Carey, in 1998; daughter, Helen Dunton, in 1999; and daughter, Julia “Judy” Hudkins, in 2005.
Pauline accepted the Lord at a young age and was baptized into the Baptist faith at a small church near Rochester, Ind., where she grew up. She continued to enjoy attending services after her move to Michigan and was baptized a second time in 1974, when she officially joined the congregation of the Midway General Baptist Church in Benton Heights. After that little church closed its doors, Pauline attended services at the Red Arrow General Baptist Church until her health began to fail and she was no longer able to do so. Pauline enjoyed reading her bible and spending time with her family. She also loved the nurses who cared for her these last 2 1/2 years and considered them also her “children.”
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Red Arrow General Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Richard Kiser officiating. The Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, St. Joseph is in charge of the arrangements.
