Dorothy's Obituary
Dorothy Zaban Abrams passed away on Monday, January 7th, 2008 at her home with her loving family at her side.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Rabbi Michael Rascoe officiating. Burial will follow at B’nai Sholom Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple B’nai Shalom or to Hospice at Home. Dorothy was born on August 27th, 1921 at Mercy Hospital in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the daughter of Morris and Bessie (Glassman) Zaban. She attended Hull School and graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1938. After graduation she attended Bertha Mae Academy. After graduation, she went to work for Dr. Michael Faber, MD as a medical assistant, and worked with him for thirty-nine years. After he retired, she agreed to help Southwestern Medical Clinic open up an office in Benton Harbor, and managed the clinic for fifteen years until she retired in 1993.
Dorothy was a charter member of the Berrien County Medical Assistants Association as well as the Benton Harbor Emblem Club. She was a member of Hadassah and Bnai Brith. For over thirty years she was an active member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, holding many offices on the Flotilla and Division level. She was a dedicated member of the Board of Directors of the Lakeland Clinic at Mercy Center for many years, as well as being a Volunteer at Lakeland Medical Centers, both at Mercy in Benton Harbor and Memorial in St. Joseph. She also served on several committees dedicated to assisting the City of Benton Harbor. She loved to cruise up north with her husband Paul on their boat, through the straits and on up to Canada. She also loved to collect antiques.
She was a dedicated member of Temple B’nai Shalom, Benton Harbor, Michigan.
She is survived by her husband, Paul A. Abrams, whom she married in July 11, 1970 in Benton Harbor. She is also survived by her children, Paula Ann (Jeffery) Hubbard of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, Michael Jay Buchbinder of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Paula Annette (Dennis) Rupp of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Stevan Dana Abrams, Victoria Lynn Abrams of Guthrie, Oklahoma and Thereasa E. Abrams of Carbondale, Illinois’ as well as by five Grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Seymour B. Zaban of Benton Harbor, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Bessie Zaban, a brother, Harold M. Zaban, and her sisters, Evelyn M. Zidman and Ruth E. Zaban.
