Sylvia's Obituary
Sylvia Ester Marie Skoglund, recently of Bridgman, passed away Friday morning, August 17, 2007, at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman. Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Burial will be Wednesday, August 22, at 1:00 P.M. in Riverview Cemetery – St. Joseph. Memorials in her memory may be made to either Woodland Terrace or to Hospice at Home. She was the only child of Harold Wilhem and Marie Skoglund. Sylvia had three children, David, Stephen, and Karen Anne. She worked for many years as a Graphic Art Designer for the local advertising firms Paxton and Nettudu. She was a former city council member in New Buffalo. More recently Sylvia worked in Public Relations for the Cook Nuclear Plant in Bridgman. Sylvia attended De Pauw University in Greencastle, IN where she was active in the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Later she earned her Commercial Art degree from Andrews University. Sylvia loved reading, her dogs, and always had a deep love and appreciation for nature. Furthermore, she was a multi-media artist who enjoyed sculpture, painting, ballet, and taking “fancy diving classes.” She was extremely proud of her Norwegian culture and ancestry. Sylvia served as local president of the Sons of Norway Society Lodge # 516. Her grandfather, Carl Skoglund, was a sea captain who owned and operated a fleet of commercial tall ships in Norway and Sweden. Her father, Harold Skoglund, was a Mechanical Engineer for Stellite Surgical Steel, a division of Union Carbide in Kokomo, IN. Sylvia is survived by her children, David Eric Hart of Fairplain, Stephen Carl (Laura) Hart of St. Joseph, and Karen Anne La More of Marquette, MI; 2 grandsons, Matthew (Andrea) and Michael Hart; one grand-daughter, Addison Hart; and by her beloved cousin, John Fryxell of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents.
