Velma's Obituary
Velma Jane Hosbein, 92, of St. Joseph passed away May 8, 2007 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 11, 2007 at 11:00 AM at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 Delaware Avenue, Benton Harbor with Fr. Bill Jacobs and Msgr. Eugene Sears as con-celebrants. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 10, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a liturgical prayers at 6:30 PM at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Memorials in her name may be made to Blossomtime, Inc. or Birthright. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Velma Jane was born September 7, 1914 in Benton Harbor to Earl & Freda (Fitzsimmons) Yendes. She graduated from St. John’s High School and was a member of the first graduating class of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She married the love of her life, Gordon W. Hosbein, on August 1, 1935 at St. John Catholic Church in Benton Harbor and together they had three children. Velma Jane was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. True to her giving nature, she was a lifetime member of the Women’s Service League and enjoyed her membership at the Berrien Hills Country Club. Survivors include her son – Gary (Barbara) Hosbein of St. Joseph, her daughters Sandie (Ken) Kaminski and Valerie (Roger) Thomas, both of St. Joseph; her grandchildren – Brian and Christopher Curneal, Heather Brookhouse, David and Michael Kaminski, Stephanie Hedstrom, Heidi Hosbein and Gordon Hosbein, Carrie Adams and Jay Thomas; fourteen great-grandchildren; her sister Alice (Sam) Mandarino of St. Joseph. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents, her husband Gordon Hosbein (1996), and her sister Jean Estes. Velma Jane was a delightful, loving woman who will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
