Dorothy Nichol, aged 102, of Berrien Springs went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 3, 2007, in Grand Rapids.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 10:00 AM Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, officiated by Rev. Jane Lagston, with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Berrien Springs. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Mary VanderFord, her husband of 47 years, Bernard, one daughter, Elaine Schmidt, two sons-in-law, Ralph DeVries and John Schmidt, her sister and brother-in-law, Mabel and Hathaway Haines, and one great-great grandson, Ryan Tyree. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Jean DeVries of Berrien Springs, grandchildren, Mary (Jeffrey) Porter of Allendale, MI, Ralph (Sally) of Niles, MI, Dorothy (Neil) Strefling of Warren, MI, Hilda (Doug) Montey of Coloma, MI, Kathy (Dennis) Mallon of Carmel, IN, Denise Schmidt of Anchorage, AK, Linda (Robert) Staneck of Cherokee Village, AR, Michael (Deborah) Schmidt of Richmond, VA, Joyce (Bernard) Steffes of Dorr, MI, Steven (Loretta) Schmidt of Shelbyville, MI, thirteen great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and two nephews, as well as many friends from church and the Central County Senior Center. Mrs. Nichol was a long-time member of Hinchman United Methodist Church and of American Legion Auxillary . She spent countless hours knitting, quilting and doing needlepoint and tatting projects. Her many lovely hand-made items were enjoyed by friends and family alike. She loved being surrounded by her family eating pizza and having a glass of wine. Her love of her family was only surpassed by her deep love and devotion to her Lord Jesus Christ. She will be missed by all who knew her.
