Florence's Obituary

Florence A. Boyer, 91 of Berrien Springs died Thursday, February 01, 2007 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Friends may call on the family Sunday from 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, February 5, 2007 at 1PM at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph with Pastor Melanie Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in Watervliet City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Animal Aid, the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan, the Berrien Springs Senior Center or Hospice At Home. Florence was born February 1, 1916 in Paw Paw, Michigan to Bessie and Harry Young, who preceded her in death in 1971 and 1955 respectively. In 1934 she married Albert (Bud) Leight, who preceded her in death. Florence later married Theodore Lloyd Boyer on November 2, 1945, who died May 7, 1953. For 22 years she worked as an Inspector at the VM Corporation. She then worked for 22 1/2 years for her beloved boss, Dr. Philip Hecht, D.V.M. Florence enjoyed a life-long passionate love for all animals. She bred and raised Boxers, Poodles, Schnauzers, and Bassett Hounds plus raised Siamese Cats. An accomplished equestrienne, she owned a number of horses throughout the years, raised pet calves, pigs, goats, etc. Furthermore, she boarded a multitude of animals and cared for abandoned, homeless, sick and injured animals during her lifetime. She is survived by four daughters: Connie (Walter) Duschek of Berrien Springs; Bette DiMiceli of Parker, Colorado; Frances Mills of Mill Creek, Washington; and Jean (Bicknell) Beckwith of Carlsbad, CA. 12 grandchildren, 27 great- grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild. Also surviving are three nieces, two nephews, three great nieces, four great-nephews, two great-great nieces and two great-great nephews. She leaves numerous dear friends and neighbors including childhood friends Helen Cole Morrow of Algonac, Michgan and Terry Zelkovick of Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl Gobiel, Elnora Chaddock, and Julia Hasse, and her dearest friend, Betty J. Daubert. Her faithful dog and companion, Petey passed away recently, was cremated, and will be buried with her.
